Chapter 159 I had to play it cool.

Get 5) Menu "Elaine," Selene called toas she stood just a few steps away. Her eyes shimmered with unshed tears.

I said nothing, squinting slightly as I waited for her to continue. She needed to gather herself, and I wasn't about to help her along.

Finally, she blurted out, "Could you stay away from Logan?" I frowned, confused by her audacity. "What?" "You've already broken up with him," she said, her voice trembling but determined. "He's withnow. You're part of his past. I don't want you showing up around him and affecting his mood." Her reddened eyes sparkled with tears, but I couldn't help but laugh. So this was about earlier-she was blamingfor the punishment Logan had dealt her.

"Are you suggesting you can't afford the compensation and would liketo help you cover it, Ms. Vaughn?" I asked mockingly.

Her face turned pale as if I'd struck a nerve. She had made a point of flaunting her financial struggles before, and now she assumed I was mocking her poverty.

But it wasn't her lack of money that amused me-it was her sheer ridiculousness.

"I couldn't afford it before," she snapped, recovering fast, "but things are different now." Her confidence clearly cfrom her relationship with Logan. Having him officially by her side gave her a sense of power, and she was using it now to lash out.

I tilted my head slightly, feigning realization. "Oh, that's right," I said. "You're no longer the widow of Liam, the husband even his own family wouldn't acknowledge.

The mention of Liam's nmade her freeze. Her lips quivered, and tears spilled from her eyes. "Elaine, don't use Liam to attack me," she whispered. "I'm only asking you to stay away from Logan- not just for me, but for your own sake too." I smirked faintly. "Oh, really? And how exactly is this for my benefit?" Selene wiped at her tears, her voice trembling but steady enough. "Logan resents you now, Elaine. He's upset that you moved on so quickly. He feels like you never truly loved him during the past ten years." I raised an eyebrow. "Did he tell you that?" "No," she admitted, biting her lip. "He's too proud to say it, but I can tell." I let out a bitter laugh. "Oh, so now he's the victim? Letget this straight. I move on after being dumped, and suddenly he's the one feeling wronged?" "Elaine, how can you say that about him?" Selene protested, her voice rising.

"How else should I put it?" I shot back. "Should I say he's an amazing guy who made the right choice by picking you? Should I thank him for remembering all my good qualities while he was choosing someone else?" My words hit their mark. Selene bit her lip so hard I thought she might draw blood. She fell silent.

#Menu I dropped the sharpness in my tone slightly but kept my stance firm. "Selene, don't try to manipulate me. I'm not falling for your tricks. Don't waste your ttesting me. Logan is someone I've let go of. Now that you're with him, I'm happy for the peace it brings me. Honestly, I should thank you." Her lips trembled as if she wanted to retort, but she had nothing left to say.

My eyes flicked to her slightly rounded belly, and for a second, I thought about saying something. But I decided against it. Instead, I turned on my heel to leave.

Before I could get too far, Selene called after me, "Since you don't care about him anymore, could you at least speak to his parents? Tell them not to blhim for what happened?" I didn't even bother turning around. "Why would I do that?" When she didn't respond, I walked away, leaving the amusement park behind.

As soon as I stepped into the lobby of Star Empire, a familiar face m greeted me. He spottedfrom across the room and waved enthusiastically. "Elaine, what a coincidence!" I forced a polite smile. "Mr. Hall."

Alex strolled over, his expression smug. "So, have you enjoyed your little break? You'd better be back at work tomorrow, or I might have to start recruiting sfresh talent." I rolled my eyes internally but kept my tone light. "If you're trying to scare me, don't worry I'll be back tomorrow." From the corner of my eye, I spotted Caleb approaching. He sawtoo.

"Elaine," Caleb called out, his voice warm.

I waved at him and turned back to Alex, eager to end the conversation. "Mr. Hall, I have a friend here. I'll see you tomorrow."

Alex, however, wasn't ready to letgo just yet. "What kind of friend?" he asked, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Abbyfriend, maybe? Why don't you introduce him?" Before I could respond, Caleb stepped in, his voice calm but firm.

"Yes, I'm her boyfriend, So I'd suggest you keep your thoughts to yourself, sir."
