Chapter 44
When the Davis family left the Rosewood residence, none of them were in a good mood.
Scott and Bella saw them off while only Elysia and Emma were left in the living room.
“Why did you do that?” Emma hesitated for a moment, but the question slipped out.
Elysia shot her a sideways glance with a smirk on her face. “Why? Don’t you wantto do that?”
“Why would | want you to do that?” Emma said.
Elysia said, “Don’t you want to be Robert's fiancée? If | don’t agree, you might be able to marry into the Davis
family.”
Emma froze. She didn’t believe that Elysia would be so kind, but she couldn't think of any other proper
explanation. She thought, ‘Could it be that she didn’t like Robert?”
Emma had guessed right. Elysia didn’t like Robert at all, which was why she had refused-nothing to do with
helping Emma.
Matthew had made it clear with his words earlier-Emma wasn’t good enough to be his daughter-in-law. Even if
Elysia refused the Davis family, it was still uncertain whether Emma would marry Robert.
When Scott returned after seeing the Davis family off, he pointed at Elysia and shouted, “What's wrong with
you?”
Bella tugged at Scott's sleeve. “Calm down. Even if Elysia can’t get into the Davis family, we still have Emma.”
This was Bella's true intention. She tried to calm Scott down, not out of kindness, but because Elysia had
rejected the marriage proposal from the Davis family. This meant her dear daughter Emma still had a chance to
marry into the Davis family.
She considered herself a good mother, always planning for Emma's future. However, her perspective was too
simple. Even without Elysia, the Davis family might not accept Emma.
Scott shook off Bella’s hand and snapped sharply, “Do you think it’s that simple? Why do you think the Davis
family didn’t bring up the engagement until after Elysia returned to the Rosewood residence? They were

“Didn’t you hear what Matthew was implying? They don’t want Emma! Got it?”
Bella finally understood. Indeed, Matthew had subtly hinted earlier that Emma, as an adopted daughter, could
never marry into the Davis family. The fact that she couldn’t get in meant that even if Elysia didn’t, Emma
wouldn't have the chance either.
The marriage agreement between the Davis and Rosewood families might just cto an end.
When Scott's words hit, Emma’s heart ached once again. She felt sad that the Davis family didn’t want her all
because she was adopted. She thought, ‘Why did Elysia get everything so easily? And why could she just reject it
all with a simple word?‘
Elysia, used to Scott's outbursts, just looked at him coldly, a smirk tugging at her lips. “I have my reason for
doing this. Do you want to hear it, Dad? Maybe you'll be pleased.”
Scott frowned, still skeptical. “What is it?”
Elysia said, “We can talk about it in the study.”
“Fine,” Scott said.
Only Bella and Emma remained in the living room. Unable to hold it in any longer, Emma burst into tears,
clinging to Bella. “Mom, why am I not your biological daughter?”
Bella held her close, her face filled with sorrow. “Sorry, dear. | failed you.”
Meanwhile, in the study, Scott rubbed his forehead, looking exhausted. “Alright, tellyour
reason.”
Elysia smiled gently before speaking. “The Davis family does have roots in Sivro, but they rarely get involved in
business matters. The key point is that if you compare them to other powerful families, they really don’t stand
out at all.
“Don’t you wantto marry into a family with more power? A family that could bring much more benefit to the
Rosewood family than the Davis family ever
could.”
Scott turned to Elysia. He had thought about it before. Given Elysia’s pretty looks, she could marry into a
prestigious family, and it would certainly

be ideal. However, it wasn't that easy.
Noticing the frown on Scott's face, Elysia added, “Why not take a gamble, Dad?”
Scott finally lifted his gaze and nodded. “Don’t disappoint me.”
Elysia’s heart turned cold. Hearing Scott say that, she felt a pang of disappointment. She thought, ‘Could any
father really want his daughter to go down this path?”
When she spoke, she secretly hoped Scott would scold her, but he didn’t. Instead, he supported her. It seemed
that, to Scott, a daughter was merely a stepping stone.
At 7 p.m., when Elysia arrived at Stellar Restaurant, Zane was already waiting for her. As soon as he saw her, he
gentlemanly pulled out a chair for her.
Elysia sat down and took a look around the restaurant. Oddly enough, the vast space seemed to be entirely quiet
except for the two of them. ‘Did he reserve the entire place?’ she thought.
“What are you looking at?” Zane asked when he noticed her glancing around.
Elysia blinked, caught off guard, and then apologized, feeling a little embarrassed. “Nothing. By the way, why did
you askout tonight?” “Let’s eat first.” As soon as Zane finished speaking, a waiter brought out a tray of
dishes. Zane said, “These are the specialties of the restaurant. | didn’t know what you like, so | ordered one of
everything. We can always try more.”

Elysia watched as dishes were placed on the table one by one, filling it completely. She shook her head. “This
should be enough.”
As she saw the spread Zane had arranged for her, her curiosity about what he wanted to discuss grew even
more. “So, why did you askhere today?”
Zane paused for a moment, set down his fork, and asked, “Do you know Ada?”
Hearing the name, Elysia froze for a moment, wondering why Zane was bringing her up. She quickly composed
herself and asked, “What do you want?”
Zane said, “My mother is a huge fan of Ada. | want to ask her to design a dress for her as a birthday gift, but |
can’t seem to get in touch with her.”
“How do
you
think | would know Ada?” asked Elysia.
Zane said, “We met before, at the Scented Garden. You were wearing a white dress, and if I'm not mistaken, the
dress was Ada’s work.”
He was talking about the day Elysia went to see Nicole, and she had indeed been wearing a white dress that she
designed herself. She was surprised that Zane had recognized it right away.
Elysia said, “I do know Ada. | can help you with that.”
Hearing Elysia’s response, Zane smirked. He wasn’t sure what kind of relationship Elysia had with Ada, but her
agreement to help him had already fulfilled his goal.
Zane said, “Thank you, Elysia.”
The way Zane called her that, so affectionately, caught her off guard. And once again, her heart was pounding
violently.
