Nadine eased up and stared at Brad with anticipation. Eagerly, she waited for him to leave and head to Jean
instead. Brad had regained his composure after the call.
"I'll be there right now."
Nadine was relieved. She prayed silently, hoping that he'd fuck off in the next instant.
Ten minutes later, the sound of his car engine revving echoed from downstairs. She drew in a deep breath,
feeling as if she'd been rejuvenated.
She had resisted fiercely when he kissed her earlier. Having bit not only his tongue but also his neck, she'd
thoroughly enraged him. Now, being able to escape unscathed was already heaven's blessing.
Yet, her eyes dimmed like a flickering candle in the pitch-black night, slowly extinguished by the wind.

When Brad arrived at the hospital, the doctors and nurses were all gathered in Jean's ward. The beeping of all
sorts of medical equipment broke the silence of the night.
The moment Lynn saw him, she hurried toward him and sobbed.
"Mr. Hamilton, Ms. Sawyer hadn't eaten all day. Her blood pressure suddenly increased at night. If | hadn't
insisted on getting the doctor over, you wouldn't be able to see her now."
Watching the doctors and nurses tend to Jean, Brad hung his head in guilt. He felt conflicted as he stood outside
her ward, wondering whether things wouldn't have escalated if he had csooner.
He chanced a glance at Lynn. He lit a cigarette, and he began puffing it in silence. Lynn wasn't sure whether he
was angry or blaming it on her.
Eager to distance herself from the situation, she quickly added, "Mr. Hamilton, Ms. Sawyer's aunt cthis
morning.
"She had a lengthy conversation with Ms. Sawyer, saying that her son had gotten in trouble and she demanded
that Ms. Sawyer ask you for help to resolve her son's situation.
"But Ms. Sawyer refused. So, her aunt kept berating her and said lots of awful things."
Brad frowned. "Her aunt cby?"
Seeing that he was willing to respond to her, Lynn was ecstatic. She nodded vigorously.
"Yes. Her aunt insisted on forcing her to seek your help to plead for her son, who raped someone."
Standing by the window, Brad fumbled with his cigarette and hummed in acknowledgment. He dismissed her
with a wave, indicating that she could leave. Brad's friendly display toward Lynn lifted her spirits.
"Mr. Hamilton, it's quite cold out there. I've brewed scoffee for you. Letget sfor you to warm

Without giving Brad a chance to refuse, she hurried off. She reappeared a while later with a cup of coffee and
handed it to him. Brad glanced at the cup of coffee and took it.
"Thanks," he mumbled. He fell silent after that. He placed the cup of coffee on the windowsill and didn't drink it.
Though he was with Jean, his mind was occupied by Nadine. The way she stubbornly refused to let her tears fall
lingered in his mind. No matter what happened, he'd never seen her cry despite being married to her for six
years.
Today, experiencing her tears firsthand left a burning sensation on his fingertips. He wasn't physically injured,
yet the sensation was so overwhelming that it made his heart ache.
Was she still crying? When Brad left, he didn't unbind Nadine and had no intention of doing so. Given her temper,
he thought he had to teach her a lesson.
