each breath he took straining against the pain.

Allison nodded and took a deep breath. “Understood,” she said. As if trying to steady her nerves, she poured the
disinfectant over her right hand. Under her breath, she whispered, “Don’t be scared.”

“Alice, you're the one who looks scared,” he teased.
She shot back, her tone firm, “I was talking to myself.”
